So, one important question which every patient ask me before their Bariatric Surgery-
Is Bariatric surgery safe?
And the answer is a definite Yes
Bariatric Surgery is performed by Laparoscopy, which is keyhole surgery where multiple holes are made. So, it is as safe as any other Laparoscopic procedure. Example- Gall Stone Surgery, Hernia Surgery, or Appendices Surgery. The challenge here lies in the profile of the patient who is undergoing Bariatric Surgery.
These are usually patients with very high BMI and weight in the range of 150 to 250 Kgs with multiple medical issues. So, the key here is to optimize the patients before the surgery. Example- Control of their blood pressure and sugars, a cardiac evaluation, and complete fitness assessment, chest optimization and breathing exercises, a preoperative liquid diet (if required), and kidney functions to be optimized.
So in a nutshell, it is very safe, having said that it should be done at centers where the surgery team, the anesthesia team, and the ICU team are used to performing these cases and they have the necessary backup. So, don’t be afraid and hold our hands in this amazing journey of your weight loss and getting fitter.
