How Successful is Bariatric Surgery?

Studies show that bariatric surgery can improve and resolve many co-morbid conditions. A review of more than 22,000 bariatric surgery patients has shown:

  • Improvement in or complete resolution of conditions including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnoea
  • 61.2% reduction of excess weight

*Success measured as a loss of 10% of initial body weight.
** Weight loss is not maintained once treatment ends.
*** Success measured as a loss of 50% of excess body weight

How Do i Know If I Am a Candidate For Bariatric Surgery?

Patients must meet specific criteria before they will be considered for Bariatric surgical procedures

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) of greater than 40
  • BMI of > 35 accompanied byone or more co-morbidities- that include diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, hyperlipidemia, metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovarian disease etc.
How much weight can I expect to lose?

How much weight you lose after surgery depends on the type of surgery performed and your level of commitment to nutrition and exercise goals.
One is expected to lose up to 60 to 80 percent of your excess weight within one to two years of surgery.

Does Obesity Surgery resolve diseases like diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea etc.?

Yes. Bariatric Surgery has shown to cure diabetes in 83% of patients and reduce the dose of Insulin & diabetic medications in 17%.
The control of hypertension and thyroid problems also become better. Obstructive sleep apnoea patients and fertility disorder (PCOD) show remarkable improvement.

How long will I stay in the hospital after bariatric surgery?

The average surgical time for gastric bypass is about 3 hours and sleeve gastrectomy is about 1-2 hours. Almost all patients can walk a few hours after surgery. They start to have liquids the day after surgery. The majority (more than 95%) of patients only stay in the hospital for 2 to 3 days

How bad is the pain after surgery?

Most patients have some pain after surgery. However, the pain is usually just a little bit more than laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. Most patients just need to take oral pain medications for a few days after surgery.

When can I go back to work after surgery?

After surgery, most patients return to work after one to two weeks. Because of the significantly reduced calorie intake, patients have low energy for 1-2 weeks after surgery. However, most patients gain their energy back once they start to have soft food.

When can I start exercising again after surgery?

As soon as patients totally wake up from anaesthesia, we encourage patients to walk. The key is to start slow and listen to your body. If you lift weights or do sports, stay “low impact” for the first month (avoid competition, think participation). One can do all exercises after the first month

Do I need to take proteins and vitamins after surgery?

You will need to take protein and multivitamin supplementation for few months after procedure

Will I lose hair after bariatric surgery?

Hair loss after bariatric surgery is known to occur following surgery. This hair loss is related to excess weight loss and is not due to the surgical procedure. However, hair loss is almost always temporary. Adequate intake of protein, vitamins, biotin and minerals will help to ensure hair re-growth, and avoid longer term thinning.

Do patients need to have plastic surgery after weight loss?

After losing most of the excess weight, patient may have some loose or sagging skin. For many patients, this might be just temporary. The degree of loose or sagging skin depends upon how much weight you lose, your age, your genetics and whether or not you exercise or smoke. Generally, many patients can hide loose skin by clothing or compression garments. Plastic surgery may be required to remove excess abdominal & breast skin, arms and thighs

What if I want to get pregnant after bariatric surgery?

It is recommended that women wait at least one year after the surgery before pregnancy so that their body should be fairly stable (from a weight and nutrition standpoint), and you should be able to have a healthy pregnancy.
After losing most of the excess weight, there is much less risk of having problems during pregnancy and childbirth. There is also decreased risk of having miscarriages and stillbirths. Bariatric surgery also reduces the chance of needing a C-section. The kids born to mothers after bariatric surgery are less prone to being obese later in their life.
