The inflammation of the appendix is called appendicitis. An appendix is a 3 1/2-inch-long tube of tissue extending from the large intestine. The appendix is a vestigial apparatus and one can live even if the appendix is removed from the body, without apparent consequences.
In the case of Appendicitis, the only definitive treatment is Laparoscopic Surgery to remove the appendix & it is considered a medical emergency. If not treated timely, inflamed appendix eventually bursts and spills infectious materials into the abdominal cavity, resulting in peritonitis which can be fatal to a patient’s life
The surgery takes 30 minutes and requires 3 small incisions of size 0.5 to 1 cm size. The patient has minimal pain and can be discharged in most cases in one day.
